Darryl Dawkins was born January 11, 1957 in Orlando, Florida. Darryl played 14 seasons in the NBA, most of those years he played with the Philadelphia 76ers and the New Jersey Nets. Darryl was the first player to go straight from high school to the NBA. He was drafted fifth overall by the Sixers in the 1975 Draft. He played his high school ball in Florida at Maynard Evans High School. His stats and his size was so outstanding that the Philadelphia 76ers were willing to take a chance on him and draft him right out of high school. He played very little his first two seasons but by his third season he was a force to be reckoned with in the NBA. Darryl understood that basketball was entertainment. Darryl’s was known for bulldozing to the basket and smashing the ball through the hoop and on more than one occasion smashing the glass backboard to pieces. He was a fan and player favorite and still is for that matter. He talked in verse and was a showman both on and off the court and charmed his former teammates with ribald humor, fans with outlandish antics and women with irresistible charm. Darryl was also immortalized by the song Darryl Dawkins – Sound of Love by the Screaming Headless Torsos. In 2005 he as well as other former pro basketball players tried out for a NBA analyst position with ESPN as part of the network’s reality series Dream Job. On October 12, 2005 The Newark Express of the American Basketball Association named Darryl Dawkins as their head coach for the 2005-2006 ABA basketball season. He is currently available to appear at fundraisers, dinners, golf outings, trade shows, store promotions or to act as a corporate spokesperson, give a motivational talk or to sign premium and gift items for a corporation.
