Al Downing played 17 seasons in the major leagues for the New York Yankees, Oakland Athletics, Milwaukee Brewers and Los Angeles Dodgers. He had a career record of 123 wins and 107 losses. His lifetime earned run average was 3.22 and he had 1639 strikeouts and 933 bases on balls in his career. He was a member of the American League all-star team in 1967, and led the league in strikeouts (217) the same year. In 1971 he led the National League in shutouts (5).
