Al Downing played 17 seasons in the major leagues for the New York Yankees, Oakland Athletics, Milwaukee Brewers and Los Angeles Dodgers. He had a career record of 123 wins and 107 losses. His lifetime earned run average was 3.22 and he had 1639 strikeouts and 933 bases on balls in his career. He was a member of the American League all-star team in 1967, and led the league in strikeouts (217) the same year. In 1971 he led the National League in shutouts (5). In 1974, Al Downing gave up Hank Aaron’s 715 th, record-breaking homerun, which put Aaron past Ruth on the all-time list.
